Failure to Connect - AT&T USA

Post  vandy1997 on Sun Mar 02, 2008 7:37 pm

I called AT&T and had an MMS plan added to my account. I am using the AT&T USA settings listed (not including anything for APN). I get the green "m" icon, so there seems to be a connection. When I press the Send button, the swirling circle runs for about 15 seconds, then I get the following message: Failed to send MMS - The network reported: service denied". I also tried to send an MMS from a phone on te Verizon network to the iPhone, but the iPhone did not receive the MMS message. There was no error on the phone from which the MMS message was sent. Does this message relate solely to the fact that my account is not set for MMS messaging? If so, hopefully the activation will have taken place by tomorrow. Please provide me with any input or troubleshooting steps.

As an update, I received SMS messages on my iPhone informing me that I had received a multimedia message and that I could view it at viewmymessage.com and providing me with a Msg ID and a password. I received the SMS messages about 1 1/2 hour after I had sent the MMS message from the Palm Treo phone (on Verizon) to the iPhone (on AT&T with a legit AT&T contract and activation and ZiPhone jailbreak, FW 1.1.4). I sent 5 MMS messages from the Palm Treo but only received 2 SMS messages on the iPhone. So the MMS message was sent from the Palm to the iPhone, but it arrived on the iPhone as an SMS message. If I open up SwirlyMMS, it does not inform me that I have received an MMS message. As referenced in the previous e-mail, I was not successful in sending any MMS messages from the iPhone to the Palm Treo.

Hmm...AT&T has worked for other people. Have you entered the correct MMS APN, proxy and port?

That means that AT&T either didn't add the MMS feature correctly to your iPhone's account or that it was automatically removed since they added it, I had sending working on mine a while back but then it stopped due to them automatically removing the MMS feature as it isn't supported on the iPhone so their system thinks it is invalid, which is REALLY annoying!

It wouldn't be so bad if they provided a link to the actual message on viewmymessage.com, which would be easy for them to do as using the ID and password they provide I can create the GET request to load it so I don't know why on earth AT&T don't do it for us.

I would be interrested in what "mms package" you had installed. Sounds like they either didn't give you the correct thing, or your settings are wrong. For example, the plan I have is Unlimited Family Text Plan which includes sms, mms, im chat using sms, etc. for 30/mo extra since my wife texts like a banshee anyways...

ATT settings:

MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com *
Proxy: 66.209.11.032 *

APN: nothing
Username: nothing
Password: nothing

Image size: Medium

*these two settings are the only thing you need to send/recieve mms.

I think it is different if you have a family plan as the unlimited messaging plan for that includes MMS but the unlimited messaging plan specifically for the iPhone doesn't.

Well, I never was really sure if this is how mine started working or it was just a fluke. I called AT&T several times and got the general BS lines. Then one day a rep finally agreed to try and put it on. I was originally on the $20 iphone data plan. Well she messed up the phone pretty bad (couldn't get edge, wifi) I told them to take it off and put the data plan back on which they did. Still having problems getting edge working, I had a program called Services on my phone. I went into the program, had WiFi turned off and i turned off Edge (which wasn't actually even working), waited a few minutes, then turned edge back on again with WiFi still turned off. A popup came up asking me what service I had (choices were AT&T, T-Mobile, and something else) I chose the AT&T, edge started back up. I went back into Swirly and tried sending an MMS and it went through for the first time ever. Since then I've been sending, and now also receiving. Still on the $20 iphone data plan and I never get charged anything extra for MMS messages. It shows on my bill as 200 txt/mms messages included. Anyway that's my story. Hopefully it wasn't just a fluke and it will work for you.

well that isn't true, they can and have added the unlimited family text and regular unlimited text plans (that include mms not the iphone unlimited one) to iphone plans. I have one as we speak it took the lady under 30 seconds to add it. all she did was confirm that I realized that it was a fee ON TOP OF my 20/mo iphone bill

Re: Failure to Connect - AT&T USA

Post  vandy1997 on Tue Mar 04, 2008 5:14 pm

Update: I called AT&T yesterday and asked the operator to add the $20 unlimited messaging to my account. However, I still could not send or receive MMS messages. I did get an SMS message asking me to go to viewmymessage.com. Today I was going to try to delete the $20 plan and add the MMS per use for 25 cents apiece package. I spoke with the AT&T operator, who was very pleasant, and told her that I needed MMS on my account and that I wanted to get the MMS per use. She told me that the MMS feature was not activated and that she could activate it for me on the system. Therefore, it is likely that we can get MMS activated if we have the iPhone unlimited data plus 200 SMS messages package. But for each MMS message sent or received, we will be charged one SMS message plus 5 cents. If AT&T continues not to offer an MMS option once an MMS app is released under the SDK, then I will try to do this. So it seems like it is not sufficient to request the $20 unlimited messaging package to be added to the account. It may be necessary to request that the MMS feature be activated. It is possible that AT&T will not activate the MMS feature if we don't have a plan that specifically includes MMS messaging. It would be interesting for somebody to call AT&T and ask for the MMS feature to be activated on his/her account to see if it is possible.

Just to be clear, the plan that they added for me is the iPhone unlimited data and unlimited messaging bundle for $40.00. It is not the Media plan for non-iPhones that they offer. Then they just activated MMS with the iPhone plan. So that is why I am thinking to wait a couple of months and then switch back to the iPhone unlimited data and 200 SMS plan to see if they will leave the MMS feature turned on. If they do, then the issue is just that AT&T is not turning on the MMS feature on iPhones, as a stock iPhone does not support MMS messaging. I believe that there is also a 200 MMS package for $5 per month, which seems more reasonable for my use. I am just glad that it is working, so I don't want to change anything for a couple of months! Now we just need to get an automatic message retrieval function.

Here's my experience with this

Post  sumsh on Wed Mar 05, 2008 1:03 pm

I'm on a family plan with AT&T, but we don't have the unlimited messaging plan. I personally subscribe to the $9.99 200 text message plan, but it doesn't include MMS. I called AT&T to have them add MMS to my account at a cost of $0.25 per message. They informed me that their system performs periodic sweeps to look for MMS packages that have been added to iPhone-specific accounts. If if finds any, it will automatically shut them off. Apparently, this sweep happens often, because I've had to call AT&T three times in the last 24 hours to have them turn MMS back on. I asked if there was any way to have MMS permanently added to my account, and they said "no." If anyone has any suggestions on how to get around this problem, let us all know!

I added the $20 unlimited messaging, and it has not been turned off in 2 days. My data plan reads as follows: IPHONE DATA + UNL $40.00.

NOOOOOOOooooooo. lol. ok your problem is you got the iPhone data/unlimited txt plan. not the iphone data/200txt AND the unlimited message plan... read my new post: How to get MMS on ATT

edit: ok so you do have it working? good for you, heh. That is very strange that they just "added mms" to the iphone data/unlimited plan... are you paying 25 cents for them? or 5cents? or are they free? The "media package" for non-iphones works like a charm. and at 20 for unlimited its the exact same as 40 for iphone plan it's just the 20 iphone plan and the 20 unlim. plan
iPhone: OTB 1.1.1
firmware: 1.1.4
status: Jailbroken (ZiPhone 2.5)
service: AT&T (Cingular) USA
MMS: receiving: yes
sending: yes
(though no one can open the files yet because they are "too large" except
my wifes iPhone)
